A new music magazine finds its way to the Thai market

IN A CLIMATE that’s not exactly friendly to the printed word, it takes guts to launch a music magazine where others have failed.
But Piyoros Luckcam, former editor of Music Express, thinks he can succeed with his new rag Music X.
“I would call it a ‘music pocketzine’,” says Piyoros Luckcam, chatting with XP during the recent launch party at Rock Pub.
“We are using a different model from the original music magazine. Granted it is still a printed publication in a digital world, but I think the fact that it is ‘touchable’ and has a ‘physical presence’ will pay off. There are still a lot of people out there who like to read papers and magazines and maybe even collect them.
“The idea behind Music X is to blend a pocketbook with a magazine full of content and columns from well-known writers and from the music websites. And as everybody communicates online these days, I’ve chosen an online channel – Facebook – to distribute my pocketzine with the print copies delivered to fans. That helps to reduce expenses. I will also distribute it at several concerts.
“I’ve always dreamt of having a publication and I hope this will inspire other people to produce their own books like me.”
Paradox’s front man Ittipong Kridakorn Na Ayudhaya, owner of the publishing house Tatamag, talked on stage with Piyoros at the launch.
Kluaythai, one of the bands featured in the pocketbook, serenaded the crowd with tracks “Khon” and “Hanuman” off their album “12 Animals.”
Music X is the first publication to go out through Tatamag. Columnists include Paradox’s bassist Chakrapong “Song” Siririn, members of rockers Ebola and people working in the industry.
The first issue of Music X is on the theme “Rock Of Ages”, and explores rock music these days and in the future through international bands Bring Me the Horizon, Imagine Dragons, Muse and Maroon 5.
Other pages feature interviews with local outfits Slot Machine, Ebola, Brandnew Sunset, Lomosonic, and Paradox, plus label moguls as well as album reviews.
The magazine is priced at Bt220 and can be purchased, along with the official T-shirt, |at Facebook.com/musicxthailand.
