Everyone's a winner
The nominations are close in just about every category at the 12th Kom Chad Luek Awards
ROMANTIC DRAMAS “Tukkae Rak Pang Mak” (“Chiang Khan Story”) and “Pawang Rak” (“Concrete Clouds”) are widely tipped to pick up a few prizes at the 12th Kom Chad Luek Awards this Monday, with each boasting six nominations, five of them in the categories of Best Film Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor, Best Director and Best Picture. Box office favourite “Khid Thueng Wittaya” (“The Teacher’s Diary”) and “Timeline Jodmai Kwam Songjam” are also in the running with four nods each, underlining filmgoers and critics’ passion for well-told love stories.
“Chiang Khan Story”, which is set in this charming district of Loei province, stars Jirayu “Kao” La-Ongmanee as Tukkae, a young man with sweet boyhood memories of a girl named Pang (Chontida “Pleng” Asavahame). When he comes to Bangkok to work on a film in which she stars, he doesn’t give up his dreams and sets out to win her heart. The film won five awards at the Bangkok Critics Assembly including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Screenplay but only picked up Best Actor at the 24th Subhanahongsa Awards, Thailand’s answer to the Oscars.
Indie director Lee Chatametikool’s “Concrete Clouds”, which won Apinya Sakuljaroensuk the award for Best Supporting Actress at both the Bangkok Critics Assembly and Subhanahongsa awards, is set during the economic doldrums of 1997 and tells the story of a Thai expat who returns home for his father’s funeral and decides to track down an old high school girlfriend. He also offers counsel to his younger brother, who is pining for a troubled woman (Apinya) living with her prostitute sister.
Channel 3’s soaps come to the fore in the TV category with “Vieng Roi Dao”, “Samee Tee Tra” and “Malee Rerng Rabum” competing for four awards apiece including Best TV Screenplay, Best Director and Best TV Drama. Channel 5’s “E-Sa-Rawee Chuangchoti” is also in the running.
Indie group Monomania, who won the first runner-up prize in the “Bacardi Hitz Unheard” contest, tops the list of nominations with five for Best Recording, Best New Artist, Best Duo and Group, Best Song (“Sao Nao Muak Dang”) and Best Album (“Another Side of Human”.)
The modern rock band features three students at the College of Music, Mahidol University – Napat “Boom” Prueksachatthavorn on vocals and guitar, Kathawut “Plai” Chandang on guitar and Khanet “Ken” Ongarjwuthiwong on bass. Their first single, “Sao Noi Muak Dang”, has been doing well in the charts, as have their other tracks “Roong See Thao”, “Ban Phi Sing”, and “Tua Ton.”
Singto Numchok has four nods in the Best Record, Best Male Artist, Best Song and Best Album categories, Sugar Analog has three –Best Instrumental (“EP Moire”), Best Recording, and Best New Artist, as do Sonnet and Alcohol for Best New Artist, Best Duo & Group and Best Song with “Thang Pisaj”. Stamp and Bodyslam join them in the threesomes, the former for Best Male Artist, Best Song (“Sat Pralad”), and Best Album (“Sci-Fi”) and the latter for Best Recording, Best Duo & Group and Best Album (“Dharmajati”).
Unsurprisingly the Popular Vote is divided between the contestants of two reality talent shows. “The Star’s” Napat “Gun” Injaiuea, Warawut “Tum” Poyim and Vorakorn “Kang” Sirisorn are up against Academy Fantasia’s Nontanun “Kacha” Anchuleepradit and Satida “Aim” Pinsinchai.
