Sperry keeps its surface-gripping top-siders striding along fashionably
A slippery boat deck almost cost Paul Sperry his life, so he spent years trying to perfect non-slip shoes for yachtsmen and other sailors. The day in 1935 when he noticed his cocker spaniel effortlessly darting across the ice was the day of revelation: Sperry carved grooves like those on a dog’s paws into a rubber sole – and the Sperry Top-Sider was born.
The American footwear firm’s origin is a saga of noble determination and it’s led to many seasons of boat shoes for both men and women that have extended far beyond merely practical to become chic and alluring.
This season there are three collections for men that look as good on dry land as on deck. Perfect for every surface, from sand to urban pavements, the Camo Sole has camouflage pattern paired with other eye-catching materials, including nylon, grain leather and stone-washed canvas. The Drifter boasts cool vintage detailing. The Seaside Penny follows the design of the original boat shoe in rich suede and leather for supreme comfort.
For women there is the Woven – two-eye boat shoes with weaving and metallic details in a variety of colours – and the Angelfish, which utilises Breton stripes for a truly nautical look. They’re the perfect choice for a cruise or touring sun-drenched ports of call.
