Kim would feel awkward if the meeting were held in a country with a multi-party system while Trump would feel the same in a country with a one-party system. But Thailand’s system is unique; we could say weird. Think of the platypus, a mammal that lays eggs, lives on both land and water, has web-feet, and is duck-billed and beaver-tailed, all in one.
Thailand has a multi-party system, but all the parties are dormant. The country is ruled under the three-branches-of-government system, similar to the US – only the legislative branch is chosen by the junta, whose chief executive is a despot, similar to North Korea. Also freedom of speech and the press here are limited, a halfway position between the US and North Korea.
Both leaders would feel comfortable here, and the summit would be good for tourism too. But they have to hurry before we transform to democracy after next year’s election, at which time Kim won’t feel so comfortable here.
