The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition is a sleek and powerful tablet computer for both entertainment and work. Its bright and clear 10.1-inch Super Clear LCD screen features a crisp resolution of 2,560 x 1600 pixels, making it very good for watching HD videos, viewing HD photos and reading e-books.
It has a hefty memory of 3 gigabytes, which supports effective multitasking. Its good performance is also attributed to an eight-core processor – four cores running at 1.9GHz and four other cores running at 1.3GHz.
Note 10.1 2014 Edition runs on Google Android 4.3 (Jellybean) operating system with Samsung’s own user-interface called “magazine style UX” (user experience). The magazine-style layout allows you to organise your favourite resources in an easy-to-use dashboard and then access that content for a stylish reading experience.
In magazine UX, the home screen looks like most Samsung tablets, but its two other screens provide the magazine look and feel. It’s interesting that one of them provides news content from leading sources such as Bloomberg Businessweek and the New York Times.
The other home screen provides access to Samsung Apps, Samsung Hub and Video clips in magazine style.
And its large, bright and crystal clear screen, which delivers four times the pixel density of the original Galaxy Note 10.1, provides premium-content viewing experience for either watching videos or reading magazines and e-books.
The new Galaxy Note 10.1 looks sleek at 7.9mm thick and with a textured back cover with stitching on leather-like material.
More nice features are support for the fastest Wi-Fi 802.11ac connection and an infrared port so the tablet can be used as a universal remote control.
It can be used with a micro SIM of the new USIM, which is the smallest form factor, and it supports HSPA+ 3G connection of 850/900/1900/2100 MHz. During my test I used my home Wi-Fi connection primarily.
The Note 10.1 performed well. The touch screen and menus were quite responsive. HD video clips flew without performance hiccups. The high-resolution screen displayed photos crisply and clearly, with good colours.
Like other models in the popular Note series, the Note 10.1 also supports Multi Windows, which provides a real multitasking experience.
You access Multi Window by tapping the slide-out panel on the left side. You can select any application and drag it to the screen, and then drag another application to a new location so you can work on them side by side. You can drag and drop content from one application window to the other.
The Note 10.1 comes with an improved version of the S Pen stylus like the one launched with the flagship Note 3. The S Pen has a useful Air Command Menu like the one used on Note 3.
When you slide out the S Pen from its slot, the Note 10.1 will turn on the touch screen and then launch the Air Command menu. This menu can also be activated by pressing the S Pen button while hovering the S Pen over the screen.
Air Command displays five useful and fun functions – Action Memo, Scrapbooker, Screen Write, S Finder and Pen Window.
Action Memo lets you jot down something, like a phone number or a contact name, and then draw to select the number to make a call or add the number to your contact list or to send an SMS messages to the number.
Screen Write lets you easily capture a screenshot, which is saved to a folder in the Gallery. And you can draw or write on it or crop it as well.
With Pen Window, you draw a “window” on the screen and a list of applications pops up. Select one and it will run inside the windor – Calculator, Clock, YouTube, Phone, Contacts or Internet Browser.
Scrapbooker is an app for creating a digital scrapbook with content from the Web, videos, photos and more. While viewing a Web page, press the S Pen button and draw a line around any area to select it.
S Finder lets you search for a wide variety of items on Note 3, including email, documents, images, music and applications.
The Note 10.1 runs voice calls with a headset or a speaker system like the Galaxy Gear smart watch.
Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition with 32GB of storage retails for Bt20,900.
