Boxing Boys' heads to Singapore

The world's first non-verbal Thai kickboxing stage performance premiered in Thailand at Ratchadalai theatre earlier this year and was praised by critics. The show is conceptualized, directed and cochoreographed by Ekachai who is also known for his 2003 movie “Beautiful Boxer” and the 1997 musical “Chang & Eng”.

“Boxing Boys” blends the lethal and graceful martial art of Muay Thai (or Thai kickboxing) with energetic street dance, physical comedy and delightful romance. The 17strong cast performs live on stage in highly physical, adrenalinepacked show. 

Since starting rehearsals last October, all the actors have been working out at a fitness centre to ensure their bodies look good on stage. Ekachai laughs at the publicity the show is getting among gays, saying that the feedback suggests that many women are keen to watch the hunks too.

Just like his “Chang & Eng”. Ekachai uses many Thai “props” to play with the theme including the khon masked dance, Nang Yai shadow puppets, likay folk opera and even traditional desserts through his story of life in a boxing camp.

The director believes “Boxing Boys” has more potential than “Chang & Eng” because it is more visual, exotic and trendy. He also sees the show as an alternative to Muay Thai. In brief, he thinks the show is his most enjoyable work to date and he hopes it will have the same effect on audiences.
