Urgent attempts by veterinarians and Krabi’s Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park officials to save the life of a severely injured dugong have proved unsuccessful.

On Tuesday, a team of veterinarians from the Phuket Marine Biological Centre and park officials attempted to rescue the unfortunate dugong, whose back was supposedly cut by a boat propeller.

The dugong, a male aged between 8 and 12 years, measured two metres and weighed around 150 kilogrammes. The wound was quite big – 30cm in length and 5cm wide.

The veterinarians believed the animal suffered from the wound for more than a week and might have come to seek shelter in Maya bay.

They transported it to a veterinary hospital for endangered marine species in Phuket. However, the dugong succumbed to its wound during transportation.
