More than 200 cases of Delta variant found in Bangkok

An outbreak of Covid-19 at a construction workers’ camp in Bangkok has spawned 206 cases of the Indian Delta variant, the Department of Medical Sciences (DMS) said on Monday.

The 206 cases were found at a construction camp in Lak Si district, according to DMS chief Supakit Sirilak. They are among a total 235 cases of the Delta variant discovered around the country.

Two apiece were found in Nonthaburi and Phitsanulok, all linked to the Lak Si camp. Other provinces where the Delta variant has been detected are Nakhon Ratchasima (2 cases), Saraburi (2), Buri Ram (1), Ubon Ratchathani (1), Samut Songkhram (1) and Roi Et (1).

Another 17 cases linked to the Lak Si camp are under investigation in Udon Thani.

The Delta strain is thought to be at least 40 per cent more transmissible than Alpha variant or UK strain.

The UK variant still accounts for 90 per cent of all infections in Thailand, according to recent lab analysis of 3,595 cases, Supakit said.

So far, the country has seen only 26 cases of the South African or Beta variant, all of which were found in Tak Bai district, Narathiwat province.
