City Governor Aswin Kwanmuang opened Bangkoks sixth field hospital on Wednesday as the capital reeled from a record 876 new Covid-19 cases and 14 deaths.

The Ratchaphiphat 2 field hospital is located in the temple school at Wat Si Sudaram Worawihan in Bangkok Noi, which is one of 16 districts battling cluster outbreaks across the capital.

The Ratchaphiphat 2 field hospital has space for 200 patients (100 men and 100 women) with mild Covid-19 symptoms but can be expanded to support another 36 patients.

"This is the first field hospital to open inside a temple with strict measures to contain the spread of Covid-19, including wastewater and garbage management," Aswin said.

City Hall was setting up more field hospitals to cope with the expected rise in infections, he added. He noted that Covid-19 had now spread into Bangkok's communities and worker camps after emerging in entertainment venues in late March and early April.

"Therefore, we ask the public to obey restrictions to cut the number of new Covid-19 cases as much as possible," he said.
