With national parks still being closed due to the situation, animal lovers have been content to see, feed and interact with the long-tailed macaques on the roadside.
The monkeys, which have suffered from a food shortage as visitors were confined to their homes during the lockdown, were forced to forage for the little food available in garbage cans. Some have also been killed by vehicles dashing down the road.
However, their suffering has come to end. The Bang Khun Thian District Office said tourists and locals alike can now visit the macaques and are urging visitors to bring food along “to make the monkeys happy again”.
