South Korea reported 60 new cases of the coronavirus, increasing the total number of infected patients in the country to 893, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said. The 16 new cases were in the southeastern city of Daegu, where a church, the centre of the outbreak, is located, and 33 were from North Gyeongsang province.
A fourth passenger in the 80s from the cruise ship Diamond Princess in Japan, meanwhile, died from the novel coronavirus, NHK reported on Tuesday. There are around 690 cases of infections on the cruise ship. Reportedly, Japanese authorities are in contact with 23 passengers who were mistakenly released from the cruise, at least three of those passengers have retested negative for the coronavirus. According to Japan’s health ministry, the 23 passengers in question were required to have a second test because
their initial test came before February 5, when the cruise quarantine was ordered.
In the US, there are now 53 confirmed cases, including 19 new patients from the Diamond Princess evacuation, 14 other cases were in California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Washington state, Arizona and Wisconsin, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The official stated that the number of confirmed cases among the Americans who were evacuated was likely to increase.
