A retired schoolteacher in Phichit under duress at having to repay the debt of a teacher friend who’d committed suicide apparently took his own life in turn early on Monday.

Police said Permsak Srichaisak, 62, died in hospital of a gunshot wound to the left upper thorax.
They were summoned to the man’s house in Phone Thalay district at about 5.30am and found him lying in bed with a .38 revolver nearby.
Relatives said Permsak, who’d retired from teaching public school two years ago, had been depressed after he was called upon to repay the debt, to which he was the guarantor.
His friend, also a teacher, had obtained the loan from a teachers’ cooperative, naming Permsak as a guarantor, but then hanged himself.
The relatives said Permsak had threatened to kill himself if he could not raise the money by Wednesday.
