A tall order
Buddhists gather at Wat Wang Yai in Songkhla’s Thepa district yesterday for the 10th Month Merit Making Festival, in which food offerings for deceased ancestors will be placed on top of a scaffold soaked with oil.
After the religious ritual, local youths will compete in the “Ching Pred” (taking things from ghosts) contest by climbing up the slippery pillars to get the food offerings. Some of the offerings will be distributed and others kept by the youths.
The month of September is the 10th in the Thai calendar.
