Readiness of organic laws still key to govt’s election timeline thinking: Prawit

The government will stick to the readiness of four organic laws required by the charter being the key deciding factor for the timing of the next national election, despite the Election Commission (EC) having come up with a nominal election date, Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan said on Tuesday.

The EC has reportedly set an initial election date under internal planning for its staff, but the government already has its timeline, and would rather keep to the required organic laws being in place before setting the polling date.
The deputy PM declined to confirm whether there would be a general election next year, again citing the readiness of four organic laws as being a prerequisite for reaching a decision.
The Constitution Drafting Commission has been working on 10 organic laws required by the new Constitution, four of which are necessary before an election can be held.
Two of the four – the EC and political-party laws – have been passed by the National Legislative Assembly.
