THEPCHAI YONG, the president of the Confederation of Thai Journalists, has been appointed vice president of the Confederation of Asean Journalists (CAJ).

On Friday, the CAJ adopted a declaration emphasising the need for the regional media grouping to play a more active role in response to the emerging Asean Economic Community.
The changing media landscape, in which traditional media are being challenged by new media platforms, also makes it imperative that the 40-year-old CAJ and its members re-examine their roles to stay relevant, according to a statement issued at the end of the two-day conference.
The event was hosted by the Vietnam Journalists Association, which assumes the organisation’s presidency for the next two years.
Thepchai is editor-in-chief of the Nation Multimedia Group, the parent company of The Nation newspaper.
During the conference, Benny Antiporda, vice president of the Philippine National Press Club, handed over the presidency of the CAJ to VJA president Thuan Huu while Thepchai was named vice president of the CJA at the same event.
Thailand will host the next general assembly of the CAJ in 2017.
Thepchai and Thuan Huu on Friday also signed a memorandum of understanding for closer cooperation between the CTJ and the VJA in news reporting, personnel exchanges and training.
