Abbot revered by Thai Chinese dies at 76, respected for dharma knowledge
THE ABBOT of the most important Chinese Buddhist temple in Bangkok died yesterday. He was 76.
Phra Khanajarn Chin Thammapanyajariyaporn, abbot of Wat Mangkon Kamalawat – better known as Wat Leng Noei Yi – died peacefully at Bangkok Hospital.
He had been in the monkhood for 56 years.
A royal-sponsored bathing rite was held at the temple from 5pm yesterday.
Wat Leng Noei Yi in Yaowaraj, or Bangkok’s China Town, is the most revered Buddhist temple in Thailand by Thai-Chinese.
Phra Khanajarn Chin Thammapanyajariyaporn was deputy chief monk of the Chinese Mahayana Buddhist Monk Council.
He had Thai nationality and was born in 1940.
The abbot was respected for his dharma knowledge and loved to enhance his studies in various branches. He was also respected for practising the monk rules strictly.
Like the temple he oversaw, the abbot was much revered by Thai-Chinese and was known for his excellent management skills.
