PM orders assistance to indebted farmers

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha has instructed the Interior, Justice and Finance ministries as well as the Government Savings Bank and the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives to speedily aid more than 1.6 million debt-burdened farm

The farmers had a combined debt burden of Bt388.36 billion, or about Bt237,000 per head 
The move aims to prevent them losing their farms to capitalists and creditors, said Maj-General Sansern Kaewkamnerd yesterday.
According to a recent report by the Interior Ministry, 149,437 farmers owed Bt21.59 billion to off-system creditors while 1,488,125 owed Bt366.77 billion to financial institutions.
