Power plant employees teach kids about electricity in "Energy for Life on Tour"

TUESDAY, JANUARY 20, 2015

The Electricity Generating Public Company Limited, or EGCO Group, recently joined hands with the Energy Ministry's Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO) and the Education Ministry's Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) to launch the "Energy

Dr. Sakul Pochanart, SEVP - Strategy & Asset Management of EGCO Group said that as Thailand’s first Independent Power Producer (IPP), EGCO Group has striven to produce power efficiently to ensure national power security whilst also fostering engagement from communities and society.

“With the ‘Energy for Life: Reduce Global Warming with Sustainability’ project, we aim to educate our children about power production and hope that they’ll be able to apply the knowledge gained in consuming energy and resources in their daily lives more efficiently. Of course, we’d like to build a deeper understanding of the Sufficiency Economy philosophy too.” Dr. Sakul explained.

EGCO Group held its second “Energy for Life on Tour” mobile exhibition around the country with the help of employees from EGCO Group’s power plants.

This year’s exhibition was held under the theme “Energy for Life Wonderland” centred around the idea that just a small group of people can bring positive change to the world. The exhibition comprised six knowledge bases for children to join - Global Warming Crisis, Let’s Learn About Energy, Choose to Consume under the LCA Concept, Life’s Power to Sustainability, Thought Cycle in Energy for Life and Speak out to the World.

After visiting all six bases, the children tested their newly acquired knowledge in the ‘Energy for Life Quiz’.

Soraya Kalya, an M.2 student at Petchaboon’s Srimongkol Wittayakom School near EGCO Group’s Bueng Sam Pun Solar Power Plant, said that she gained both entertainment and education from the exhibition, especially from the ‘Let’s Learn About Energy’ knowledge base, which taught her about the process of power generation.

“Fai” – Anyika Manokrua, an M.2 student at Lampang’s Sadej Vanajayangkul School, revealed that she felt very happy to attend the activity, which provided useful information about LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) concepts. She found out in the ‘Energy for Life Quiz’ session, for example, that eating certain types of meat can help reduce Green House Gas emissions.

EGCO Group’s volunteers also gave their impressions.

Amnaj Klaitrakool, a senior technician at Chaiyaphum’s Theppana Wind Farm, said that he felt proud to have been able to serve as an education volunteer for students from Thepsathit Kindergarten School and Triprachapattanasuksa School, teaching them about the process of wind power production, which is one form of renewable energy.

Another impression came from Supisara Khotcharat, an employee of EGCO Group’s Foreign Business Development Department. She used modern media like animated cartoons to attract the interest of young students from Rayong’s Pluekdaeng School.
