The international brands that have been copied include Lancome, Clinique, Shiseido, Dior, Gucci, Chanel, Burberry, SK-II, Etude, Olay, Maybelline and domestic cosmetics brands Nitipon, Wuttisak and Yanhee.
Pajchima Tanasanti, director-general of the DIP, said yesterday that police had confiscated 35,877 pirated items in an attempt by the department, the DSI and a private cosmetics firm to crack down on violations of intellectual property rights and bogus cosmetics.
The contraband and copies came from four distribution and production centres in Pathum Thani and Bangkok.
The DIP says it will continue suppressing phoney products at their source, as the problem has smeared the country’s image and created health problem for consumers.
Consumers should not buy cheap goods without any concern for where they were manufactured, Pajchima said. Such merchandise is easily found at market fairs and bazaars.
Consumers should select only trustworthy shopping venues and stores to ensure they are getting quality goods, she added.
