According to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, such saving is equivalent to the reduction of carbon emission by 177 tonnes and fuel consumption by 56,736 litres.
Today, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra presided over the launch of the national campaign at the Government House. Power consumption usually peaks in April, the hottest month in a year. Power saving is also necessary as 1,000 million cubic feet daily gas supply from Myanmar will be cut off during April 8-17 due to annual maintenance.
EGAT Assistant Governor for System Control Piboon Buacham said that at 1,000 million cubic feet, that will affect the power generating of 5,600MW and result in lower power reserve during the period.
"Egat ensures that there would be no shortage, but the general public can also lend a hand," he said.
Egat said that should all parties continue turning off power during 2-3pm as it was today, during the gas supply suspension period, Thailand should save daily fuel consumption by 1.3 million litres and reduce carbon emission by 4,000 tonnes.
