Democrat Party to allow 2-year members to run for leader, down from 5 years

SATURDAY, APRIL 27, 2024

The Democrat Party held its annual general conference at the Miracle Grand Hotel in Bangkok on Saturday.

Party leader Chalermchai Sri-on, its secretary general, its executive committee, current and former MPs, as well as representatives from party branches nationwide, totalling several hundred, attended the conference.

Chalermchai spoke about an amendment to the party regulations, which included reducing the tenure for serving as a party member before assuming positions such as party executive committee member or party leader from five years to two years.

In addition, there was an amendment regarding the proportion of votes in the selection committee and party executive committee. Previously, the proportion was set at 70% for MPs and 30% for other committee members. This was adjusted to 40% for MPs and 20% for other committee members. This decision was approved by the consensus at the meeting.

Chalermchai disclosed that after conversations with members of the Democrat Party, he aims to maintain integrity and adhere to principles to lead the party forward. He emphasised the importance of creating a positive image for the party and reiterated that improvements within the party have been ongoing since assuming the party leadership position in the past three months.

He also revealed ongoing efforts to engage with former party members, expressing confidence that more will return in the future.

He said that in the nearly four months since the Election Committee approved this executive committee on January 3, it has been working tirelessly. Today, the Democrat Party stands firm with the same principles and mindset as before, he said, asserting that they have never betrayed anyone and remain steadfast in their commitment to being 100% Democrats. He emphasised that revitalising the Democrat Party is the responsibility of everyone.

One of the first initiatives he undertook was the establishment of an Innovation Centre for Democrat Party Communication. This marked the beginning of utilising social media to drive political engagement.

"Because of what we couldn't keep up with or where we fell short, one thing we agree on is the use of social media. We're lagging behind in that regard. Hence the reason for setting up this centre," he said.

In the second part of the initiative, Chalermchai said, he began establishing a strategic committee for the party to set clear goals and directions. This involved inviting former MPs and former party executives to participate in defining the direction of the party.

Additionally, there will be a working group to oversee party members nationwide. Moreover, there will be a Political Strategy Committee tasked with inviting several esteemed seniors to join and collectively analyse the political situation.

"If we have integrity, I assure you I will lead the party forward and will not engage in damaging or tarnishing actions. Every decision will be based on the principles and this institution, without personal interests. I urge everyone to be the backbone as we expand the party's membership base."
