Haggerty Crushes Andrade To Win Second Belt
Jonathan Haggerty was simply too powerful for heated rival Fabricio Andrade.
“The General” needed less than two rounds to claim the vacant ONE bantamweight kickboxing world title over the bantamweight MMA king in the ONE Fight Night 16 main event on November 4. The British star now owns both the ONE bantamweight Muay Thai and kickboxing straps.
Haggerty came out firing at the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, with a series of low kicks setting the tempo. Andrade began to fire back as the fight went on, but the Brazilian star had a hard time with his foe’s speed.
In the second stanza, Haggerty stepped up the pace once again and landed a head kick at the halfway mark that sent Andrade stumbling.
The 26-year-old refused to let the bantamweight MMA king off the hook, as he unloaded power shots in search of a fight-ending blow. That blow came at the 1:57 mark, as another right hand pierced Andrade’s guard and sent him to the canvas.
“The General” now joins the exclusive ranks of two-sport world champions and was awarded a huge THB3.5 million performance bonus for the show-stopping finish, courtesy of ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong.
In the co-headliner, Tye Ruotolo took out the inaugural ONE welterweight submission grappling world title after a gruelling 10-minute battle with stubborn Russian Magomed Abdulkadirov.
The 20-year-old grappling phenom kicked things off early in the bout by pulling guard and looking for an opening to latch onto a submission.
It took some time for Ruotolo to break down the resolute defences of Abdulkadirov, but the American was awarded a catch after he turned a leg lock attempt into a tight guillotine choke.
The California native squeezed as hard as he could, but Abdulkadirov would not yield as Ruotolo relentlessly hunted a finish all the way to the final bell.
His dominance throughout the entire battle meant that Ruotolo was a worthy winner, as the judges unanimously voted in his favour. He now joins twin brother Kade as a ONE World Champion.
Ruotolo was also awarded a THB1.75 million bonus for the gruelling victory, as he joined Cristina Morales and Ben Tynan who were also awarded bonuses earlier in the day.
